Volunteer - Gifts of Time
For more information, contact Volunteer Coordinator Becky Burton at

Approximately 60 religious, business and civic volunteer groups provide supper meals to
Opportunity House clients and are scheduled up to a year in advance for their "duty"
nights. Additionally, many groups provide weekend breakfasts and lunches.
Although additional funds are always important to a non-profit organization, the
support of our volunteers is a priceless gift.
We often speak of the importance of our volunteers when
giving tours of the shelter to both adult and youth groups.

They save Opportunity House a great deal of money by preparing and often bringing their
own supplies for dinner each night - allowing us to use the limited funds we
receive to support our services.
But perhaps more importantly,
they show our clients by their very presence each night that they have value. When
clients see that someone cares and has nothing to gain from helping them but chooses to do
so anyway - those clients often find that they can begin to care for themselves and their
future again. And without that hope, all of the services in the world couldn't help
clients make better lives for themselves.
The Learning Center also has many volunteers. Youth and adults assist the staff with
the preschoolers during the day. College students and adults help school-age children with
their homework.
There are many ways that you or your organization can volunteer at the
Opportunity House.
- Child Care Helpers to read and play with pre-school children.
Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Evening and after school tutors for school-age children.
Can also
assist children with computer skills in our computer lab.
- General organization of shelter storage areas - great group projects!
- Spring cleaning - window washing, grounds clean-up, minor repairs,
light painting.
- General Office Help - filing, etc.
- Meal Preparation - especially at lunch time!
